The 36 Communes

City of Villeneuve-la-Rivière

This small Catalan village has retained the charms of the past. Deeply rural and agricultural, the village is located in the heart of the Riberal between Baho and Pézilla. A source of inspiration for artists, Villeneuve-la-Rivière is the village of well-being along the water of its canals.

The story

A rich heritage: from St John's Church to the canals and the mill

The territory of Villeneuve is irrigated by a system of canals (the oldest dates back to 1026), including that of Vernet Pia, which still irrigates the crops today. Owned by the commune, the mill is the last existing mill on the Vernet Pia canal. It will be rehabilitated around the theme of water and will be open to the public again. The Church of Saint Jean l'Evangéliste is Baroque in style and has two Baroque altarpieces by Lazar Tremullas, statues by the sculptor Nègre and its central dome, a local feature.
