Town of Llupia

At the foot of the Aspres foothills, Llupia is a charming residential village, bordered by vineyards and fruit trees. The village is located 13 km south-west of Perpignan, close to the Parc Naturel Régional des Pyrénées Catalanes which is about 28 km away. It is part of the natural region of Aspres, located between the Roussillon plain, the Vallespir natural region and the Conflent natural region.

The area of the commune is 688 hectares and its altitude varies between 88 and 140 metres.

The story

Around the church a hamlet of houses was formed whose inhabitants sought the protection of a building strong enough to protect them. This church, both a place of worship and protection, was replaced in the latter role by a more effective castle, built at the end of the 12th century.

a beautiful heritage

During the Middle Ages, the lords of Llupia played an important role in the nobility of Roussillon. The heritage of Llupia consists mainly of the parish church of Saint Thomas, dating from the 12th century. This church still contains objects of great value: a painted panel of Christ and Saint Thomas from the 16th century, an altarpiece from the 18th century. It also has an interesting 18th century triumphal arch. The Church of Saint Catherine, listed as a historical monument since 1886, is one of the most important and original Romanesque monuments in Roussillon.
