Public consultation - Restoration of the southern breakwaters of Le Barcarès 🌊

As part of its responsibilities, Perpignan Méditerranée Métropole (PMM) works on a daily basis to preserve its coastline while combating erosion and marine submersion. In urbanized areas, numerous protective structures such as breakwaters and groins have been built.

The Lido beach in the commune of Le Barcarès is equipped with 6 breakwaters. The three breakwaters located to the south of the beach were built in 1994 and have been severely damaged by several major storms. Although they are still fulfilling their protective role, there is a risk of serious deterioration in the short term.

In 2020, PMM launched a campaign to diagnose these structures with a view to rehabilitating them. The diagnosis revealed the following disorders:

  • The north and south breakwaters are in serious mechanical disrepair, but are not in immediate danger of collapse,
  • The central breakwater is in immediate danger of collapse.

Following this observation, PMM decided to undertake rehabilitation work on the latter with the aim of :

  • Combating coastal erosion ;
  • Restore their role as wave attenuators;
  • Prevent damage from spreading to the breakwater right-of-way.

The solution adopted following diagnosis of the structures consists, for each breakwater, in reinforcing the shell and completely restructuring the civil engineering. This choice is linked to a strategic objective that takes into account service life, suitability for needs and cost.

The online consultation file enables the public to consult the project and submit their comments. The consultation period runs from Monday, October 16, 2023 to Monday, November 6, inclusive.

A public meeting will be held on Tuesday October 17 at 6 pm at Le Barcarès town hall.
